From YBA to New Zealand Football Leadership

At Ysgol Bryn Alyn, we are always proud to hear about the achievements of our former students, and Daniel McNeil has certainly built an inspiring career.

Since leaving YBA in 2015, Daniel has turned his passion for football into a successful profession, working across a range of leadership and development roles within the game. His career has included positions such as Cell Lead at Coventry City, Academy Director at Bala Town and Phase Lead at Flint Town, helping to develop young players and shape football programmes at every level.

Daniel has recently embarked on an exciting new challenge in New Zealand, where he is currently Technical Director at Northland Football Club. In January 2027, he will take on the role of Director of Football, overseeing the strategic development of the club and its football provision.

While his professional achievements are impressive, Daniel's journey has not been without adversity. During Year 10, he contracted meningitis and lost his hearing overnight, spending a month in intensive care. Following a cochlear implant, he returned to school determined to continue his education and pursue his ambitions.

Reflecting on that period, Daniel speaks warmly of the support he received from staff at YBA:

"The support I received from YBA was incredible. The staff went above and beyond to help me catch up, and I'll always be grateful."

He particularly remembers the support, guidance and humour of Teaching Assistants Candice Doughty and Sandra Jones, who helped him navigate one of the most challenging periods of his life.

Daniel's story is a powerful reminder that setbacks do not have to define our future. Through determination, resilience and a willingness to keep learning, he has transformed a lifelong passion into an international career.

His advice to current students is simple but powerful:

"Chase your dream. Success doesn't happen overnight. It takes hard work, learning from others, accepting setbacks and continuing to grow. Your circumstances don't define your future. This is your journey, so work hard, keep learning and never stop chasing your dreams."
