Professor Kit Messham-Muir attended Ysgol Bryn Alyn between 1983 and 1987 during the years when Jim Wilde was Headteacher. Since then, his journey has taken him from Wrexham to Australia, where he has built an internationally respected academic career and is now a Professor whose research explores the role of art in conflict and war zones.

Also, here’s a few videos about his research:

After leaving North Wales, Kit emigrated to Australia and went on to complete a PhD before pursuing a career in higher education and research. Today, he is recognised for his work examining how artists and communities respond to war, conflict and peacebuilding through creative practice. His research has taken him around the world and has contributed to a greater understanding of the power of art to tell stories, preserve memories and support recovery in communities affected by conflict.

Despite living on the other side of the world, Kit remains proud of his roots and the values he developed whilst a student at Ysgol Bryn Alyn. In fact, the school's motto, Dim Heb Ymdrech ("Nothing Without Effort"), still appears in his email signature today and continues to guide his approach to life and work. He often reflects on the importance of perseverance, believing that success comes from determination, hard work and a willingness to keep going when challenges arise. This philosophy has remained with him throughout his academic career and is something he actively shares with others.

Kit's achievements demonstrate how far ambition, curiosity and dedication can take you. From the classrooms of Ysgol Bryn Alyn to becoming a leading academic in Australia, his story is an inspiration to current students. It is also a powerful reminder that the lessons learned at school can stay with us for a lifetime.

Although he now lives in Australia, Kit regularly returns to Wrexham to visit family and friends and remains connected to the community that helped shape his early years. We are incredibly proud to celebrate his achievements and delighted that the spirit of Dim Heb Ymdrech continues to influence his work on the global stage.
