Alumni Spotlight: Sophie Kocker

At Ysgol Bryn Alyn, we love hearing about the incredible journeys our former students go on to take, and Sophie Kocker is a fantastic example of how ambition, hard work and a willingness to step outside your comfort zone can open exciting opportunities.

Looking back on her time at YBA, Sophie remembers the encouragement and support she received from staff, helping her to develop the confidence to pursue her goals.

"I can't thank the staff enough for the support and encouragement they showed me throughout that time."

In particular, Sophie credits Jo Ebrey, then a member of the PE department and Deputy Headteacher, with helping her believe in herself and embrace new challenges.

"Jo Ebrey was an important part of my YBA journey, inspiring me to step out of my comfort zone and choose the best path for me on my education journey."

During her years at Ysgol Bryn Alyn, Sophie threw herself into a wide range of opportunities. She completed her Bronze and Silver Duke of Edinburgh's Awards, before later achieving the prestigious Gold Duke of Edinburgh's Award at Coleg Cambria. Completing all three levels is an outstanding achievement and one that demonstrates resilience, commitment and determination.

Sport was also a major part of Sophie's school life. A talented netball player, she represented the North East Wales squad throughout her time at YBA and competed in regional and national competitions with her club team.

Following school, Sophie studied the Level 3 Diploma in Uniformed Public Services at Coleg Cambria, achieving the highest possible grades of Distinction Distinction Distinction***.

Today, Sophie is preparing to begin the final year of her Criminology degree at Lancaster University, a goal she first set herself while studying at Ysgol Bryn Alyn. Alongside her academic studies, she continues to excel in sport as a member of the Lancaster University Netball Team.

One of the highlights of her university experience came in May 2026 when she competed in the famous Roses Tournament, the annual sporting contest between Lancaster and York universities, recognised as the largest inter-university varsity competition in the UK and Europe.

Sophie's advice to current YBA students is simple:

"Take it all in and enjoy these years at high school. They fly by very quickly! Challenge yourself to step out of your comfort zone and try something new."

Her story perfectly demonstrates how embracing opportunities, pushing yourself beyond what feels comfortable and making the most of the support around you can lead to incredible achievements.

Whether through the Duke of Edinburgh's Award, sport, further education or university life, Sophie has shown that success comes from being willing to challenge yourself and keep moving forward.

We are incredibly proud of everything Sophie has achieved and wish her every success as she completes her degree and pursues her future career.

Mae'n ysbrydoledig iawn. Truly inspiring.

Once a YBA'er, always a YBA'er.
