The new pitch was officially opened by former Wales international Rhiannon Roberts, who is a fantastic role model for young footballers and a proud supporter of girls’ football. Following the opening, Rhiannon took to the pitch to coach a group of the school’s girls, sharing her experience and inspiring the next generation of players.

The event brought together pupils, staff, community representatives and special guests to celebrate what is an exciting new chapter for sport at Ysgol Bryn Alyn.

Councillor Phil Wynn delivered a wonderful speech, highlighting the importance of the new facility and the opportunities it will provide for young people in the local community. The school was also delighted to be joined by Mark Drakeford and Ken Skates, who helped make the occasion even more memorable.

Music played an important part in the celebrations, with talented pupils Aurelia, Callum and Theo providing a series of musical interludes to help mark the opening. Their performances added a special atmosphere to the occasion and showcased the wider talents of Ysgol Bryn Alyn pupils.

Once the formalities were complete, it was time for the footballers to take centre stage. Boys’ and girls’ teams from the school were given the honour of christening the new surface with a series of matches, putting the pitch through its paces and celebrating the opportunities it will now provide.

One of the most striking features of the new facility is the mural surrounding the pitch. It celebrates two footballers with strong connections to Ysgol Bryn Alyn: former pupil and footballing personality Robbie Savage, alongside Wales international Rhiannon Roberts.

The mural is particularly significant because it places a female footballer at the heart of a sporting facility. Ysgol Bryn Alyn believes this is the only football pitch in Wrexham to feature a female player in its mural, sending a powerful message about the importance of recognising and supporting girls and women in sport.

The school hopes that the new pitch, together with the mural and the visit from Rhiannon Roberts, will inspire more pupils to get involved in football and encourage the next generation of girls to believe that they too can reach the highest levels of the game.

The opening was therefore about much more than a new football pitch. It was a celebration of ambition, inclusion, talent and community - and a commitment from Ysgol Bryn Alyn to ensuring that girls’ football has a prominent place in the future of the school and the wider community.

With the first goals already scored and the new pitch officially christened, Ysgol Bryn Alyn's 3G facility is ready to become a place where the next generation of footballers can learn, play, develop and dream.
