A Grand Slam Success for Ysgol Bryn Alyn Student at Lexus Wrexham Open Competition
A talented Ysgol Bryn Alyn student has served up an ace performance after winning the top prize in the Lexus Wrexham Open literacy competition, impressing judges with her research, attention to detail and enthusiasm.
Year 9 learner Lydia Sebesta has been crowned the overall winner of the competition, which challenged students to combine their literacy skills with a passion for sport by recording a commentary of last year's tennis final and producing a written report linked to the tournament.
Judges praised Lydia's outstanding entry, highlighting the quality of her work, the depth of her research and the confidence she demonstrated throughout the competition.

As if lifting the trophy wasn't enough, Lydia's winning performance has also earned her a remarkable opportunity to receive expert mentoring from a current sports commentator, who was so impressed by the standard of her entry that they offered to support her development.
The competition proved a smash hit with Ysgol Bryn Alyn students, with four learners shortlisted from the school. Alongside Lydia, congratulations also go to Tomas Jones, Ifan Stanworth and Cerys Andrews, whose entries showcased creativity, excellent communication skills and a genuine enthusiasm for sport.
The awards ceremony was held at Net World Sports, where students enjoyed an unforgettable evening that included table tennis, an awards presentation and the chance to see themselves transformed into tennis stars. Learners were also treated to a buffet provided by Net World Sports.
Zoe Cooper, Assistant Headteacher and Head of English and Literacy at Ysgol Bryn Alyn, said:
"Competitions such as this provide a fantastic opportunity for students to see the real-world value of literacy. Through researching, writing and presenting their ideas, our learners developed key communication skills whilst building confidence and resilience. The standard of work produced was exceptional and Lydia's success, along with the achievements of all our shortlisted students, demonstrates how literacy can open doors to exciting opportunities beyond the classroom."

The competition formed part of the Lexus Wrexham Open's wider commitment to engaging young people across the region and helping them connect with major sporting events in meaningful and inspiring ways.

Headteacher Adele Slinn said:
"Wrexham is becoming increasingly recognised for hosting high-profile events that inspire young people and create memorable opportunities for our community. Competitions like this allow students to engage with world-class sporting events while developing important life skills. We are incredibly grateful to Lexus Wrexham Open and its partners for investing in opportunities that help our learners broaden their horizons and raise their aspirations."
For Lydia, the victory could be just the start of an exciting new journey.
Could this be the beginning of a future career in sports broadcasting? Time will tell, but she has certainly made a racket in the best possible way. Having already impressed competition judges and a professional commentator, Lydia has shown she has the talent, determination and confidence to go far.
From match point to masterpiece, the success of Lydia and her fellow finalists demonstrates how powerful literacy can be when combined with ambition, creativity and opportunity.
Ysgol Bryn Alyn has thanked Lexus Wrexham Open, Net World Sports and Sky Sports for creating such a unique experience for its learners and providing a platform where young people's talents could truly shine.
