Option Choices

Choosing subjects for Years 10 and 11 is an important decision, and at Ysgol Bryn Alyn we aim to ensure that every pupil has the information, guidance and support they need to make informed choices about their future.

Our options process begins in October, with subject talks and opportunities to visit Coleg Cambria. Through our partnership with Coleg Cambria, pupils can choose to study one of their options at a Coleg Cambria site, providing an opportunity to experience a different learning environment and access a wider range of courses.

Pupils and parents will then attend our Options Parents' Evening, where they can find out more about each subject, including the content, assessment methods and skills developed. Following this, pupils will submit their final choices.

There are three option blocks, and pupils are encouraged to select a first and second choice from each block. We aim to give pupils their first choice wherever possible. However, subjects must have sufficient numbers to be educationally and financially viable, so we may not always be able to offer every combination of choices. Where this happens, we will discuss the available alternatives with pupils.

How can parents support?

We encourage parents and carers to talk openly with their child about their interests, strengths, ambitions and preferred ways of learning. Careers Wales advises pupils to consider what they enjoy, what they are good at and how their choices may support future education, training or career pathways.

Try to encourage your child to make choices that are right for them, rather than choosing a subject simply because their friends have selected it. It is also important not to feel pressured to have a career mapped out at this stage. The aim is to make well-informed choices that keep appropriate future opportunities open.

Parents can help by:

  • Attending the Options Parents' Evening and asking questions.

  • Encouraging their child to research subjects and future pathways.

  • Discussing strengths, interests and career ideas.

  • Helping them consider the different ways subjects are assessed.

  • Encouraging them to listen to advice from teachers and careers professionals.

  • Supporting them to make their own informed decisions.

Our staff and Careers Wales resources are available to support pupils and families throughout the process. There is no single route to a successful future, and we want every pupil to choose a pathway that reflects their individual needs, interests and aspirations.
